i decided today not to persue a court reporting certification. i love when i wait until the last minute to make these life changing decisions. nothing ever feels real enough until it's on top of you and then you're like, shit...what am i doing? whenever i told anyone, i always felt blah about it. i'm going into something to do with law where all you do all day is type on a little machine? me...the creative writing major? the poet, the artist, the bookworm? it just always felt off. i doubt i'd enjoy any part of it. but it was a rational, easier, non-dreamer decision and that's the kind of decisions adults make, right?
so i dropped my classes. now my options are continuing my masters at OU in literature or figuring out what else would make me happy without leaving me destitute. if i lived in another state i might be able to find a copy editor or publishing position that i'd enjoy, but i don't. i live in michigan, where spending thousands of dollars on an education in any type of humanities is like burying it in your backyard...pointless.
i'm slightly freaking out about it. a couple minutes ago i was a tad bit more than slightly freaked out, but matt talked me down. tonight i'm going to chill with him and the group (which i'm now dubbing them, because they are basically my friends too at this point and it's awkward to always write all their names out) and tomorrow i will start figuring my life out.
sounds simple enough, right? gah. shoot me now.

i so understand! i just completed a master's degree in school psychology only to realize that I abhor the profession to the extent that I must find another way to live and prosper. I realized that i hated the profession during my third (and final) year of the program. Not only do I dislike the profession, I do not believe in it. I really don't think psych tests can accurate measure IQ. Perhaps, they can approximate measuring the upper limit of some construct. But, anyway, I am considering becoming a court reporter. That is how I found your comment. I am doing my research b/c I want to make certain that I find a career path that I enjoy!
Interesting and wise choice, I must say. I've been a certified court reporter for the last 22 years and have never liked the job. I hate it. I just wish I knew what else I could do as it seems I don't have any other skills...good luck and hope you found your answer...wish I could find what I'm looking for...thanks for posting.
It's nice to hear someone else say that they hate court reporting. I have been a reporter for 7 years and have hated every minute of it. All the other reporters I meet seem content w/ it and it makes me wonder why I can't find contentment. There are a lot of perks to the job but I just find myself feeling miserable all the time. I want out but don't know what path to take as I feel I have no options. I would rather slit my throat than be stuck in this job for 22 years.

You have made a very wise decision. I've been doing it for 20 years. It'sthe most confining, brain-numbing, painful job. When I take a good look at the people who enjoy it, I see people who have very little in the way of social skills and don't seem to be capable of doing anything else but being a human tape recorder. I might have known court reporting would SUBG when all the teachers who encouraged us to hang in there at school had mysterious injuries themselves that prevented them from reporting and the ones who taught part time and remained in the profession were trying to break into something else, like beauty consulting, selling magnetic mattresses, providing (grocery) home delivery services.

I have been waiting for five months for this dickwad attorney to pay me the $3,000 he owes me, while in July I only made $500. I have been a certified court reporter for 25 years. You made a great choice in not persuing this profession. Attorneys and judges are, for the most part, disrespectful and inconsiderate. There is no other profession I can think of where you receive a strange look when you ask to use the restroom. Alternatively, you're asked, "Can you wait 10 minutes?" Well, if I could wait 10 minutes without urinating on myself, I wouldn't have asked, would I? Then there's the fun part of cancelling your plans or dumping tickets to an event with no notice because what the attorneys are doing, so they think, trumps your personal life. There's the all-nighters and bearing witness to adult screaming sessions. There's the joy of receiving criticism over every little thing you do, being corrected by a "highly educated" person who knows nothing about your job, but feels compelled to throw his/her two cents in. Recently, I had a moron send me two pages of "suggested" corrections to a 200-page ROUGH DRAFT realtime feed; I'm sure his client would love to know he spent the time correcting an uncertified, rough draft transcript that would ultimately be scoped and proofread. Finally, there's the real thanks of not being paid for your work. If I knew then what I know now, I would have run to the nearest exit at my court reporting school and never looked back. It has not been worth the aggrivation and exhaustion and the beating your ego takes from being treated like the least significant person in the room as you watch adults play out their neuroses in deposition and courtroom settings! Good for you! I'm so proud you had the courage to quit when so many of us have stayed in it because we feel trapped. GOOD FOR YOU!!!

I can't stand the stupid A-Hole attorneys, the abusive judges, court administrators, other "holier than thou" court reporters and greedy freelance firm owners. I've only been certified and working for a year and it sucks. I want out, but am still trying to find a way to tell my wife how miserable I really am. The hardest part is telling your family and friends that this thing you spend three years in school working for and throwing thousands and thousands of dollars at makes you completely miserable once you get out of school. They build up so many promises that just simply aren't there.
Court reporting is a great job if you hate having benefits, hate respect, love never being done with your job, even when you're "off" or "on vacation" because of some ridiculous backlog, or if you enjoy extremely inconsistent pay.
And like everyone else said, if you enjoy original thoughts this job is not for you. Don't get me wrong, it takes some serious skill and brains to be a court reporter, but the longer you work in this field it seems to suck all the smart out of you.
Attorneys and judges aren't all bad, some are quite nice. Most, however, will take you for granted and could really care less about you. You will be a slave to attorneys and THEIR time schedules. Then you will be lucky if you can get them to pay you on time.
Most of all, I miss people. I don't like being stuck in my room all day and night editing by myself. So I'm getting out of the business after one year and trying to become a cop.
They always say tape recorders won't replace reporters, but they should. There's really no reason a tape recorder and transcriptionist couldn't do our job for less money. Mask writers WILL replace us because they get out of school faster and work for less.
You have made an EXCELLENT choice by getting out of court reporting school. Congratulations.

I have been a cr for over 20 years. It is my one tremendous mistake in life. I sit in a courtroom filled with social misfits on power trips. Though I am responsible for a verbatim record, I have to deal with attorneys with speech impediments, or those who are so excited to be in the company of a judge that they talk as if they are being squeezed. If you need food and water and have the need to urinate every now and then, forget this field, because these nuts need to react negatively to your request because it feeds their sick power trip. Well, I can go on, but truth be told, CRs are using the very equipment that will put them out of business - I think it's called audio synch. There's nothing more painful than taking down horrible accents, speech impediments, whispering and repititous bs all day and then spending the night scoping it. It is an inhumane way to make a living. Don't do it!!!

YAAAAAAAAYYYYYYY!!! I finally did it!!! I QUIT COURT REPORTING :) I wasted enough of my life and am soooo ready to move on :) :) :) I can't SMILE big enuf!!!! Go me! Go me!! Go me!! Doing my happy dance :) :) ;) :0)
You will be doing the happy dance the rest of your life. You go, person. I envy you. I have been sitting at that crampy tiny machine for years now straining to understand what these insane "experts", the unhappy losers who disappointed their mothers and didn't become doctors, and the holier-than-thou idiots who want to wear black robes are saying. It's really not a good way to make a living, so dance on and on and on.
I quit after 12 years of working as an official court reporter. I am making less money, yes, I am, but I am happy. I remember sitting there at the machine, trying to comprehend accents and whispers and watching lawyers kiss judge ass and realizing there's not enough money on this earth for this creepy job! I remember my coworkers saying, "Think of the money," and that never sat right with me. I believe it is a field inundated with dollar-hungry whackos. I am doing the happy dance too. No more court reporting. Life is good! I'm so happy with my decision!
Wow! Who knew that when Googling "I hate court reporting," I would actually find people saying exactly what I think too! Yes, after ten years struggling, my best never being good enough, having witnesses with oxygen tanks, no teeth, speech impediments, people for whom English is NOT their first language, attorneys who don't appreciate your hard work and now an inconsiderate, to say the least, judge I've been working for for five years decides to court order me to be the defense attorneys' and DA's personal secretary by adding to my job the task of transcribing videotapes from the local county sheriff's office for upcoming trials and having to have it done "timely" so that they can prepare for trial, I have finally decided enough is enough. I have closed the chapter on court reporting too.
I know this is an old post, but wow, how great to read it. I'm also a creative type, also living in Michigan...and on the brink of quitting court reporting school. I'm in my 20s and the idea that I'm already living my plan B has me in dread panic every time I sit down to practice. Court reporting was my safe bet, my easy answer, my respectable path out from behind the reception desks and cash registers of the world after graduating with an arts degree and fumbling along on a few other paths to a 'real' job. But the idea of dying with 'world's greatest court reporter' on my grave just makes my blood run cold. Talk about selling myself short! Writing down other people's words for the rest of my life and never seeing how far I can really go? I'd never forgive myself. But no one in my life would understand. I'm keeping my dilemma to myself for now as I figure out the next steps to the life I should be living; I'm happy for the space to vent here. oh my gosh. i graduated from reporting school in oct 2011, yet i have not worked in the field. i took my state certification test back in january, and i failed it -- along with 85% of the others in my state. such a sucky test. on top of that, i started to hate court reporting school about two years ago. i enjoyed it for a while, but then it just sunk in that i hate this. i kept going, though, thinking maybe i'd enjoy it again or for the mere fact that i didn't want to let my parents or friends down by dropping out. big mistake. i just wasted lots of time and money with a program i did not enjoy.
now i'm married, and i've discussed the whole reporting thing with my husband. he was a bit ruffled by the idea at first; but he's supportive now. if i'm not happy and my heart is not in it, there's not point in me trying to retest so i can work as a reporter. as of right now, i'm just doing the housewife thing, trying to find work as a secretary or something to that effect. it's a big relief to know i won't be doing depos or anything of the sort...ever.

I have been working for five months. My bosses were reviewing my transcripts for the first little while, and now I have an editor. It is very frustrating. It seems that everyone has a different take on grammar. I was a whiz in school. I never second guessed myself, and I was right most of the time. Now it seems that I am never sure. I used to love to read. Now whenever I see a big block of text, my eyes glaze over and immediately begin to hurt. (Ironic because I feel like this comment is going to be a big block of text.)
I wouldn't even mind the inconsistent pay, variable work hours, dropping everything to do a transcript, et cetera, if I found meaning in what I do.
I really wish I liked court reporting. Getting through that program was one of the most difficult things I have done in my life.
Thank you, everyone, for helping me muster up the courage to actually put a plan in motion to change my career path.
I posted on here previously that I had quit court reporting. I was so scared at the time to leave a job that I had done for almost ten years and spent three years in school to do. Fastforward two years later, I have not once regretted my decision. I actually feel like myself again. I'm no longer anxiety-ridden and miserable. My standard of living decreased, but my quality of life increased! Less money, but more joy. I love joy :)
